Kite Day Quilt Pattern Now Available

This quilt pattern has been a LONG time in the making.

I had the idea of making a kite quilt several years ago, and sketched out different ideas.  Should the quilt have kites or just kite tails?

How should I make the kite tails?  Ribbon? Applique?

Then one day I was looking at a single Irish Chain quilt pattern and it hit me… the “chain” would make perfect kite tails!

After a bit of toying with the design, simple four patches became the string, with a few larger squares added to give each kite tail some flair.

Once the light bulb went off, I sewed up a storm, and “Kite Day” was truly one of my favorite quilts to make…  I loved the colors and the easy blocks.

I finished my quilt last Spring…  but writing the pattern seemed to never get done.  I am so happy to finally have it ready to share.

This pattern is super fast to make.  The block are simple enough for a beginning quilter with only a little piecing experience.

Since each kite tie needs only a 5″ square of fabric, it’s the perfect way to use your very favorite scraps.

My quilt was machine quilted by my very talented Aunt Karen, and it really was the cherry on top.  It looks just like soft Spring breezes.

On the back of the quilt, I created a little kite on a string.

I also loved the backing… a 1930’s print showing children at play, including a kite flyer.

Kite Day Quilt Pattern includes instructions to make a 48″ x 48″ baby quilt, but you could easily make it bigger by adding rows.

  • Great quilt Calli. I love the back label!

  • It is really lovely. I like how you used the simple blocks to form the kite and the tail. The quilting is just fabulous. I couldn’t like it more.

  • Emily:

Where do you get the gorgeous 1930s prints that I see so often in your projects?

    • Calli:

Hi Emily, A lot of my older 30’s fabrics come from my Mom, who has been an avid quilter (and fabric collector) for many years. One of her good friends has given me a lot of her old fabrics and scraps too. I love 30’s fabrics and buy them often at various local quilt shops as well. In Salt Lake, I love Quilts Etc. and Material Girls Quilts. In Utah County, I shop most at Broadbents, Just Sew, Quilting Cottage, and American Quilting.

  • Oh what a darling quilt!!
