the weaving of thread

Any woman who sews or knits, or weaves, blends colors in a tapestry or creates a patchwork quilt, knows by the feel that a single thread is weak, but the weaving, the blending, the intertwining with many others makes it strong.  Any woman alone without friends to sustain her, to nurture and support, to hold with loving arms, like a single thread is weak.  But the weaving, the loving, the nurturing of others, the networks of friendship makes her strong.       – “Barbara,” 1994 The Kinship of Women

I came across this quote the other day and had to share.  It makes me think of all of you-  the friends whose blogs I read, and love, and am inspired by; those of you who read Make it Do, among many other wonderful blogs; the support we give each other in our comments and emails.  What a lovely network of friendship- it spans all around the world- weaving a thread that makes us all stronger.

  • You know I struggle with relief society and women in my ward. I really do. I seem to have nothing in common with them and I don’t feel I belong there most times. I don’t know why I’m saying this but your quote really struck me. But I do feel supported, loved and understood in my sisterhood of sewing and quilting. I have such wonderful friends around me and actually, all over the world. I can be myself with them. I absolutely do not reach out at church. I know. it is my problem. But I am grateful, oh so grateful, for those women with whom I do feel a kinship, a love, and a weaving of support. thanks for letting me vent

    • Nanette, I feel just like you! I don’t have as much in common with many of the women in my neighborhood… But just like you, I feel so grateful for my good friends, both off line and on. Women who are down to earth and love me and support me.

  • What a wonderful quote! Thanks for sharing.
