Poppies

Over 100 years ago, a women planted these poppies around her home.

She planted these roses too.

Her home is gone.  It’s just a shell of rocks and rubble.  But her flowers are still there.

We went there last night to walk among the lovely ruins.

It made me wonder what am I doing in my life that will outlive me?

This woman who planted her garden probably had no idea people would love visiting the ruins of her home to see her flowers.

  • That’s a beautiful story about the woman…and what an excellent point you make about leaving something behind. I cannot believe that the same plants keep blooming after 100 years…amazing! Thanks for sharing.

Poppies keep reseeding themselves. So the originals are long gone, but new plants come every year, as long as the conditions are right. The roses, however, would be the plants she planted, so probably over 100 years old.

I love visiting old homes and wondering who and what their stories are…thanks for the lovely thoughts and pictures!

  • I love this post! We had an old yellow rose bush on the corner of my family’s farm. It was a “leftover” same as these. It was a treat to make the trek to the back edge to pick bouquets for our teachers. Thanks for sharing!

  • Beautiful, thought provoking post. Thanks.
