Farmer’s Wife Primer

For the last year, I’ve loved following the progress of all the Farmer’s Wife Quilts around the blogoshere.  The range of styles, fabrics, and colors have been an inspiration.

I’ve had the book on my shelf since last summer.  I’ve leafed through it.  I’ve read the wonderful letters, full of wit and wisdom, that inspired the blocks.

I’ve pulled fabrics here and there and thought I should really get going and start.

What drew me most to starting Farmer’s Wife, was the difficult blocks.  If I made this quilt, I know I would learn a lot about quilting.

I started off with easy blocks… a Farmer’s Wife Primer so to speak.

So far I’ve just drafted out the blocks without using the templates.  Which is easier for me, I think.  This is Block #20 Churn Dash.

I’ve tried to choose fabrics that loosely reminded me of the 20’s and 30’s.   I love the basket weave feed sack for block #2 Autumn Tints.

The blocks are 6 inch.  And it’s so fun putting smaller blocks together.  I did a little fussy cutting for this block.

This is Block #29 Economy.  At least for these easy blocks, they go together fast.

  • I love your color choices. I am so tired of seeing everything in red + pink + aqua!

I too have the book on the shelf but have not gotten to it. I am intimidated by the tiny pieces and am considering piecing them by hand instead, as I feel I have more control that way.

  • YOur blocks are wonderful! It will be so fun to see the rest of them as you make this quilt. I really think I’ve learned a lot so far from…like you said…the difficult blocks!

I love yor palette, too. So soft on the eyes, and antiqued looking. I once had an interior designer tell me to go with more yellowed colors for my old house because it makes the decor look more authentic.

  • Your blocks are so sweet. :0) I too have enjoyed seeing all the different blocks made from this book. :0)

I just got that book and loved reading the letters! The lack of directions for the blocks seems intimidating – I look forward to seeing your progress!

I’m so glad I found your blog today. Your FW blocks are really lovely and your fabrics are really lovely. I know what you mean about using quilt to teach yourself more about quilting. I’m doing the same thing. I’m piecing mine by hand. I’m only onto my second block that way, but I know that when I am finished I will be an expert hand piecer! I’ve been feeling a bit flat about it for a few weeks now, but after reading your blog (I’m going backwards through your posts.) I’m raring to go again!
