January Pick Me Up

I didn’t take down my Christmas decorations until this Monday.  I know it’s leaving it up a bit long.  But I love to keep the spirit going until we all have to get back to daily life.

After it was all put away, my home felt so barren.

Every January I head out to buy a few new plants to bring a little green and bloom to an otherwise cold month.

I love ferns.  But I had no luck growing them indoors until I found this variety.  It’s a Rabbit’s Foot Fern.  It doesn’t mind my very arid air.

I received this orchid as a gift…  It brightens my day every time I look at it.

“Just living is not enough,” said the butterfly, “one must have sunshine, freedom, and a little flower.”
— Hans Christian Andersen

  • Living in Nebraska, the winter seems to be endless, so an addition of some “green” is a great idea to liven things up after Christmas! Thanks!

  • I always buy plants after Christmas too, everything seems so bare after the tree is down. I love the orchid it looks beautiful.

Monday was too long to have things up? From my east-coast, daughter of a Catholic, perspective, January 6th, Epiphany, the 12th Day, was the end of the Christmas season. Jesus didn’t go into the creche until Christmas morning, and the wise men didn’t arrive until the 6th. Our city had its annual Christmas tree bonfire last night, which was my inspiration to get our tree down and undecorate.

Alexa – January 7th is the day for me too!
    Happy New Year!

In Australia it’s hot – and taking the tree/decorations down still has an empty feeling…..i’ve also got flowers filling my house as a replacement – they do make everything better :)

Here in Portugal we usually wait until after 6th of January (the 3 King’s day) to take down Christmas decorations.

  • I really like your blog, so many great ideas and projects. The quote by H. C. Andersen is one of my favorites. Happy flower tending.

  • Lori:

I agree with the people who say January 6th is the final day of the Christmas season. My kids don’t want to see me take it down. It makes them sad. So I always wait until they go back to school.
