make it a party:
Make it Do Parties means using what you have, rolling up your sleeves and not spending a fortune to celebrate a special day. It doesn’t mean your party lacks style or fun… those things a party should have in abundance.
Game Day Pinwheels
It’s been a wild week around our house so we’re all looking forward to a fun, relaxing weekend and can’t wait to watch the big game this Sunday. I’m pretty sure I’ll be watching with one eye on the game and the other on my sewing project. There’s four things I really love about the [...]
Tie Dye Fun for the 4th
This past week we got together with our cousins for a little tie dye activity. We invited Jen, a tie dye expert, to come teach us how to tie dye. Jen has been tie dying for a long time… she estimated she has dyed well over a thousand items. She was so organized and knowledgeable [...]

1930′s American Girl Party
My girls celebrated their 1930′s American Girl party a few days ago. According to them, it was the best birthday’s EVER. It was one of my all time favorite birthday parties too. (Do I say that every year?) Well if I do, I really mean it this year. I love the 1930′s. I love American [...]
1930′s Party Invitations
A birthday party starts with an invitation. And for a 1930′s party, an invitation that looks like a handkerchief is just about perfect. A quick internet search turned up the perfect template for my invitations…. found at Eat Drink Chic by Amy Moss. Amy’s handkerchief templates were so lovely and perfect, I ended up using [...]
The Woodland Party
We had quite a party at our house yesterday. Ten little girls make for a very fun and lively time. I loved the Woodland theme and it was difficult not to go really crazy. But since I was on a budget, I needed to get creative, rather than buying a lot. When the girls arrived, [...]
Toadstool Invitations
The party invitations went out this week for my girls’ 8th birthday party. I wanted to make them homemade…. and I wanted to keep them simple. A bowl was my best friend for this project. I used it to trace the toadstool cap. Then I drew the bottom of the toadstool free hand. Once I [...]
Percy Jackson and the Olympians Party
Yesterday was Ben’s 9th Birthday Party, a Percy Jackson and the Olympian’s Party. Unless you are currently in elementary or junior high school you may have never heard of Percy Jackson… it is a wonderful series of books about a young unlikely hero and Greek Mythology come to life in the modern age. My husband [...]
A Party for Little Cooks
I love to throw birthday parties. I think my heart will break when my kids get too old for them. The best kind of party is a homemade party… which means making invitations, decorations and party favors. One of my favorite’s was a Cooking Party for Lily and Emma’s 5th birthday. Oh, wow… was it [...]
Make it Do… a Cowboy Party
Are you ready for a great hoedown? Here’s a fun birthday party for a little boy. Cuz what boy doesn’t love cowboys? It all starts with the invitations. Here’s how I made the “Wanted” invitations above. Dress your little cowboy in a hat and bandanna. My cowboy insisted on a six-shooter too. He couldn’t wait [...]

Hi!
I just found your website while googling a recipe. What a great find! I adore your style and suggestions. Have you ever done a pirate party or have any cute ideas? I saw a great pirate hat cake and my soon to be 6 year old boy loves pirates…. where do I take it from here? Help!
Thanks a bunch!
Holly
I have done a pirate party for my son… when he was turning 5. It was such a fun theme! We had a treasure hunt, complete with a treasure map and an x that marked the spot, of course. For the cake I opted for very simple. I made a chocolate sheet cake in a 9×13 pan. I cut the cake carefully in half and decorated it to make a treasure box. Then I made it look like it was overflowing with candy jewelry, necklaces, ring pops, and chocolate coins. The kids loved eating the candy!
I just found your site through Circle of Moms. It looks like we have some similar party planning insanity! I did a woodland fairy and gnome party for my daughter last year, and an American Girl party for her older sister. Not to hijack your post, but I did blog all about the pirate party we threw for my son, that might be helpful for your reader:

I’ll have to check out more of your fun ideas!
Thank you so much for the doll sized party hat template! My girls want an AG doll party and this is perfect. Thank you for sharing your party and all of the wonderful ideas!
